In recent years, minimally invasive surgery has developed rapidly. In the past, surgeons focused more on simply completing procedures, but today the industry increasingly values patient experience and surgical precision. Under this shift, ultrasonic scalpels—especially scissor-type ultrasonic scalpels—have gradually evolved from ordinary energy devices into important tools for many complex minimally invasive procedures.

Unlike traditional electrosurgical devices that rely on high temperatures to cut tissue and achieve hemostasis, ultrasonic scalpels mainly use high-frequency mechanical vibration to process tissue. Through rapid vibration, tissue proteins coagulate, allowing simultaneous cutting and hemostasis. Because the overall operating temperature is lower and the thermal spread is smaller, the surrounding tissue experiences less collateral damage. This characteristic is especially important in minimally invasive surgery, particularly in areas close to nerves, blood vessels, and critical functional structures, where thermal injury control is a major concern.

Currently, clinical ultrasonic scalpels are mainly divided into pistol-style and scissor-style designs. Pistol-style ultrasonic scalpels usually feature a gun-handle structure with a straighter shaft, where surgeons control energy output through buttons or triggers. These products are widely used in conventional laparoscopic surgery due to their straightforward operating logic and stable force transmission, making them especially suitable for large-scale tissue cutting and routine hemostasis. For surgeons accustomed to traditional laparoscopic techniques, pistol-style devices are often easier to adapt to.

However, in recent years, scissor-type ultrasonic scalpels have attracted even greater industry attention. Compared with pistol-style structures, scissor-type ultrasonic scalpels are much closer to the operating logic of traditional surgical scissors. They adopt a dual-jaw design capable of grasping, retracting, dissecting, cutting, and sealing tissue simultaneously. For surgeons, one of the biggest advantages of this structure is its more natural handling feel.

Ultrasonic Scalpel Scissors Type 002

The advantages of the scissor-type design become even more apparent in deep and confined surgical spaces. Increasingly, minimally invasive procedures are being performed in complex anatomical regions such as the thyroid, mediastinum, deep pelvis, and gastroesophageal junction. These areas are surrounded by critical nerves, blood vessels, and functional tissues, and inadequate control of thermal spread may directly affect postoperative functional recovery.

One of the key values of the scissor-type ultrasonic scalpel is its ability to minimize thermal impact while simultaneously cutting and dissecting tissue. This allows surgeons to perform more delicate dissections and handle complex tissues more reliably. In many precision surgical scenarios, surgeons focus heavily on whether tissue can be safely divided while minimizing damage to surrounding structures. This is precisely why scissor-type ultrasonic scalpels are becoming increasingly popular.

At the same time, the scissor structure itself also provides grasping and dissection capabilities, reducing the need for frequent instrument exchanges. In traditional surgery, surgeons may repeatedly switch between graspers, dissecting forceps, and energy devices, whereas scissor-type ultrasonic scalpels can often accomplish multiple continuous actions with a single instrument. This makes the surgical workflow smoother and further improves procedural efficiency.

Ultrasonic Scalpel Scissors Type 003

Many surgeons experienced in laparoscopic and robotic surgery have found that using a scissor-type ultrasonic scalpel feels more like continuing familiar surgical hand movements rather than simply “operating a device.” Especially during continuous fine manipulation, surgeons can receive more direct tactile and operational feedback. This is one of the reasons why the use of scissor-type ultrasonic scalpels has grown rapidly alongside the expansion of robotic surgery.

In recent years, robotic surgery has developed rapidly in thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, urology, and gynecology. Although robotic systems provide high-definition magnified vision and highly stable instrument control, tissue handling is still ultimately performed by the end effector instruments. As a result, the importance of energy devices in robotic surgery has become even more prominent.

Particularly in deep and narrow spaces, surgeons pay close attention to thermal damage control, smoke management, and the precision of tissue dissection. Because scissor-type ultrasonic scalpels more closely replicate traditional surgical movement logic, they are highly compatible with robotic platforms. Many surgeons also find it easier to achieve delicate tissue handling and stable anatomical dissection through the scissor-style structure.

In addition, ultrasonic scalpels themselves are becoming increasingly “intelligent.” Traditional energy devices mainly used fixed-output modes, but some advanced systems now incorporate tissue sensing and energy adjustment technologies. These systems can automatically adjust energy output according to tissue thickness, moisture content, and tension, helping avoid tissue overheating or insufficient cutting performance. Such technologies provide surgeons with greater instrument stability, more consistent tissue response, and smoother operation.

Of course, neither scissor-type nor pistol-type ultrasonic scalpels are universal solutions. In situations requiring rapid, large-area hemostasis, traditional electrosurgical devices still maintain their own advantages. Likewise, there is no absolute replacement relationship between scissor-style and pistol-style devices; the choice depends more on the surgical procedure, surgeon preference, and anatomical environment.

However, from the perspective of overall industry trends, scissor-type ultrasonic scalpels represent the broader movement of minimally invasive surgery toward precision, intelligence, and digitalization. The latest generation of energy platforms is increasingly focused on delivering more stable, refined, and controllable operation while minimizing tissue damage.
